Description
From commuting to carry on, hiking trail to forest picnic, the Mighty Oak is a good looking yet highly functional pack. Made from premium Waxed Twill and Bridle Leather, it will gracefully bear the marks from a lifetime of adventures. All metal hardware, big zippers, and super durable construction, ensure that you can depend on this pack to hold up to whatever you throw at it. Heritage style packs aren’t always known for their comfort, but this one has well padded and ergonomically shaped straps that ensure comfortable carrying for adventures long and far.
The bag features dual access to the main compartment through the front clamshell zipper, or the roll-top. The roll-top allows you to really stuff the bag, while the clamshell zipper lets you get at your stuff thats buried at the bottom. The expandable side pockets can fit bottles up to the size of a Nalgene. Above the pockets are G-hook straps, that allow you to secure taller items like a tripod. The top Y-strap can adjust to securely carry bulky items like a picnic blanket or yoga mat. The front pocket can be accessed through either side zip while wearing the pack, or opened all the up to give you a clear view of the items inside. Inside, the flat pocket can fit books, devices, or papers, up to 9” x 13”. The optional external access laptop compartment can fit laptops up to 16".
I make each bag single-handedly at my shop in Denver, Colorado. I believe that making things right means making them slowly, with intention in each step. In design and manufacturing - durability, functionality, and excellent finish quality are my highest priorities. Making everything in my own shop, with my own hands, means that I can ensure that high standards are being met.
Materials
- The body of the bag is made from 18oz Cotton Twill fabric, that is lightly waxed to give it some water resistance. It is quite durable and gets a nice patina as it ages. The bag is lined with Dry-Waxed 10.10oz Cotton Duck, which has a sturdy yet smooth handfeel. While the bag is not waterproof, the materials and construction do give the bag some resistance to splashes and light showers.
- The bottom of the bag, as well as the strap mount and zipper pulls, are made from 7oz English Bridle Leather by Wickett & Craig. This leather is hot waxed which allows the wax to deeply penetrate the leather. This gives it excellent resistance to the elements.
- Mil-Spec Spacer mesh is used for the back panel and straps.
- The straps use a layer of dense XLPE Foam which helps to distribute weight, and then a layer of softer open cell foam for added comfort.
- CORDURA Mil-Spec Solution Dyed Webbing. Despite being a nylon webbing, it has a soft cottony feel that goes well with the twill outer of the bag.
In order to make a bag that is as durable as possible, all of the non-replaceable hardware is made from metal. The only place where plastic hardware is used, are the cordlocks and sternum strap buckle as they can be easily replaced if ever broken.
- COBRA Quick Release Buckles
- 6061-T6 Aluminum G-Hooks, Strap Adjusters, Rings, and Slides.
- YKK #8 and #10 Zippers
- Solid Brass rivets and grommets
- YKK Heavy duty snaps
- NEXUS Mil-Spec Sternum Strap Buckle
Size and fit
When the bag is moderately filled but has the top rolled down all the way, it is 21" tall. With the roll-top at its max, the bag is 26" tall. It is 13" wide, and narrows slightly at the bottom. When moderately filled the pack measure 9.5" front to back.
21" x 13" x 9.5"
Volume: 40L (When maxed out. Rolled down its closer to 32L)

Bag Fit
The 40L version of the mighty oak is not only larger in volume, but is designed with larger wearers in mind. The straps are longer, a bit wider, and set further apart from each other. This makes the bag a good fit for broader torsos.
The back panel is 17.5" which is 2.5" longer than the one on the 24L. This is measured from the bottom of the pack to the point where the straps attach. however due to design of the straps, and the way the pack sits; the back panel is effectively 19"
Here you can see the fit of the 40L pack vs 24L.

(in these pictures I'm 5'11 and 160lb)
